Session 4: Basic Writing Skills – 1

Along with Communication, our writing skills does matter. To construct various type of sentences and apply those sentences in your written communication is the best choice for conveying your message with each other.

What is the Sentence?

A Sentence is a group of words that are meaningful and makes complete sense. A sentence must have Subject, Verb, and Object. These three parts are combined together to make the full sentence.

Example-: Rahul got 95 marks out of 100 in the half-yearly examination. (This sentence expresses the full meaning.)

What is the Phrase?

A Phrase is a group of words that are meaningful but it doesn’t makes a complete sense. A Phrase doesn’t contain Subject and Verb. Phrases are the parts of sentences that is also known as incomplete sentences without Subject and Verb.

Example -: (i) under the bed. (ii) at the great place.

Kinds of Sentences

Sentences can be possible to determine different meanings. According to the different meaning and using different punctuation marks, Sentences is categorized in four major types.

  • Declarative Sentence (statement)
  • Interrogative Sentence (question)
  • Imperative Sentence (command)
  • Exclamatory Sentence (exclamation)

Declarative Sentence

Declarative sentence is a type of sentence which have a statement with a period (.) punctuation mark. Declarative sentences is also known as Assertive Sentences. Declarative sentences can hold at-least one subject, verb, and object and the subject comes before the verb.

Example-: Sachin Sir is a responsible teacher.

Interrogative Sentence

Interrogative sentence is a type of sentence which have a question along with a question word statement. Interrogative Sentences either begins with an interrogative word such as What/When/Why/Where/Whom or with a to be verb such as Do/Does/is/am/are/was/were/will/shall and always ends with question mark(?).

For Example -: What is your school’s name?

Imperative Sentence

The sentences that express a command, instruction, prohibition, request or advice are imperative sentences.

The imperative sentences:

Begin with a base form of the verb.

its subject is not explicitly given. Instead, its subject(you) is by default understood.

For example -: Turn off the lights. (command)

Exclamatory Sentence

Sentences that convey some strong feeling or emotion are known as exclamatory sentences.

The exclamatory sentences:

  • begin with words like “what” or “How”. (usually not always).
  • and end with an exclamation mark.(!)

For Example -:

  • What a weather!
  • How cute!
  • What a terrible end of the movie!
  • How lovely this song is!
